Campfires. Canoeing. Swimming in the lake. Sleep outs. Climbing the hill. Friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

These are the experiences that make up Camp Monahan; the easiest way to guarantee your kids the best summer of their lives!

Camp Monahan is a special place for kids to spend their summers. This year, they’re celebrating 75 years of history. That’s a whole lot of memories to celebrate, as the camp holds a special place in the hearts of all that have spent a summer (or five!) there. Generation after generation just keeps coming back.

Camp Monahan is a sleepover camp nestled in the Qu’appelle Valley that provides summer fun for kids of all ages. The camp boasts outdoor activities, crafts, games and growing up the ol’ fashioned way.

Is there anything better in the warm summer months than the outdoors, campfires, hiking, swimming and hanging out with friends, new and old?

My first year at camp, I bunked with three other girls who had been to camp before, so they knew the ropes. We would talk for hours, sleep hard and wake up eager for breakfast the next morning after a long night of gossiping. We were awarded badges for Best Cabin that first year and I’m sure we went home bragging to our parents about our accomplishments.

Kids at Camp Monahan are expected to do a few chores, but somehow everything ends up being a blast! Everyone takes turns cleaning the facilities each day and has to keep their tents or cabins clean. All the beds are inspected for being properly made and week-long winners get to gang up on the all-knowing counsellors.

The outhouses have been upgraded since our time of course, but I still remember there being something special about the day when it was our turn to clean them. We even managed to find some fun in cleaning latrines!

The words to a few of the songs have (thankfully) changed. Anyone remember the original words to “The Great Ship Titanic?

“Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives, it was sad when the great ship went down…”

Yeah, in hindsight, not the best for little kids! On the other hand, some of the time-tested favourites still remain, such as… “What’s your name little boy? My name is Lemme…”

As a camper and now a parent, the memories I’ve forged at Camp Monahan have never been forgotten and cannot be surpassed. The laughter, the friendships, the process of growing up and gaining independence.

These memories are even more valuable as our kids seemingly spend less and less time outside during the summer. If you think your child would enjoy making memories like these, I can’t recommend Camp Monahan highly enough. Registration is now open for Summer 2020, and there are camps available for kids aged 6-16 between July 5th and August 7th. Don’t delay and register quickly, because some of the most popular weeks fill up fast!
